Mauricio studies the link between disease and environmental issues, such as climate and the use of natural resources, in antiquity and the middle ages.

Mauricio Ribeiro Damasceno completed his PhD at the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (UFMT) in Brazil. He teaches at the Federal Secretary of State for Education in Mato Grosso and is a member of the Vivarium research group. Recently, he has started to study the relationship between disease and environmental issues, such as climate and the use of natural resources, both in antiquity and the middle ages. His research so far has mostly centred on the history of disease and medicine, surgery, anatomy and pharmacology in antiquity and the middle ages. He also investigates treatment practices on the battlefield, conceptions of the body and medical education in the middle ages. His most recent publications include “Quando a terra adoece: a peste negra sob a perspectiva da história ambiental”, Horizontes Históricos 10 (2025).
