MHM II ties in with UNESCO heritage in Sintra

.

The second edition of the Medieval Hunting Meeting (MHM) took place on 23 and 24 October. This edition was dedicated to the theme Setting up the Chase: Where and When? and hosted by the National Palace of Sintra, an icon of UNESCO’s listings in Portugal. Speakers and attendees were welcomed by the Chairman of Parques de Sintra SA and the Palace Director in the staggering Sala das Galés to enjoy a perfect setting for a fruitful and congenial meeting, featuring papers in landscape history, post-colonial animal studies, eco-criticism, material culture, heritage, and broader environmental humanities. The full programme can be found here.

Dressed in thirteenth-century garb, a team of falconers from Falcões do Oeste showcased the flight of a falco biarmicus and highlighted the hunting traits of other falconry species. Attendees were also treated to a guided tour of the National Sintra Palace led by curator Dr Bruno Martinho, and a final highlight was the private viewing and explication of a virtually unknown bone figurine of medieval origin.

NEMUS and the Institute for Medieval Studies (IEM NOVA/FCSH), would like to thank all partners and participants: especially, the National Palace of Sintra (Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua SA) team for their invaluable support in making this event possible.
