Paulo Catarino Lopes is an Integrated Researcher at the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM) and collaborates with the Humanities Center (CHAM), in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University Lisbon, where Paulo also obtained his Master and PhD degrees in History. He is also an alumnus of Lisbon University.

A specialist in medieval culture and mentalities, his main focus is Travel and travellers (circulation and mobility), especially topics in identity/otherness; spirituality/religious thought; determinants; landscape/environment; material culture; emotions.

Among others, he has authored the following texts: “Medieval Travels and the Ensuing Texts as Mirrors of a Society, a Culture, and a World View” (in Voyages and Travel Accounts in Historiography and Literature, Stojkovski, B. (ed.), Novi Sad and Budapest, 2020) and “Late Medieval Iberia: The Perception of Ambassador Nikolaus Lanckman von Valckenstein” (in Alteridad Ibérica: el otro en la Edad Media. Martínez García, P. (ed.), Murcia, 2021).
